Docket No. 50-344 (Control Building)

Gentlemen:

Pursuant to the Staff's commitment to provide weekly reports on the status of resolution of open items and completion of the Staff's Safety E*,aluation Report (SER) in the referenced proceeding, this constitutes such report for the week ending December 14, 1979.

By letter dated December 7, 1979 in partial response to the Licensing Board's Order of November 30, 1979, the Staff listed explicitly and in some detail the unresolved problems which remain with regard to the proposed modifications and which must be addressed in the Staff's SER.

During the past week, the follow-ing progress has been made with regard to those unresolved problems.

(a) December 7, 1979 letter, Attachment 2, Affidavit of James E.

Knight, Paragraph 4(a), Fire Protection for Wood Framing and Other Combustible Fbterials.

The fire protection measures with regard to wood framing to be used derfng the modifica-tion work, as described in the Licensee's November 21, 1979 response to Staff question 4 of September 28, have been eval-uated and found acceptable by the Staff.

Accordingly, the Staff considers this unresolved problem to be resolved.

(b) December 7, 1979 letter, Attachment 2, Affidavit of James E.

Knight, Paragraph 4(b), Protection of Cables from Dropped Obj ec ts.

The measures to be taken to protect cables in the Cable Spreading Room from washers or tools dropped during installation of steel plates on the west wall of the Control Building, as described in the Licensee's November 21, 1979 response to Staff question 4 of September 14, have been eval-usted and found acceptable by the Staff.

Accordingly, the Staff considers this unresolved problem to be resolved.

No further progress has been made with regard to the other unresolved problems identified in Attachments 1 and 2 to the Staff's December 7, 1979 letter because no additional information on the outstanding Staff questions on the proposed modifications has been received and because Staff personnel responsible for preparation of the SER have been involved in preparation for the hearing ordered by the Board in its December 12, 1979 Order and in preparation of an additional response to the Board's Order of November 30, 1979.

In the latter regard, the Staff will provide the date reasonably anticipated for the issu-

&nce of the SER (in light of the Licensee's comm!tments to respond to all outstanding Staff questions by December 22, 1979), as required by the Soard's Order of November 30, 1979, during the week of December 17, 1979.

Sincerely, lj GL J
