PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION June 14, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-160 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
FACILITY: Carolina Power and Light Company Robinson, Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50-261 Hartsville, South Carolina
SUBJECT:
INDICATION OF CRACK IN FEEDWATER N0ZZLE Preliminary review of radiographs taken of one of the three main feed-water nozzle welds indicate a linear indication which may be an inside surface crack on ninety percent of the pipe circumference.
The linear indication is located in the heat affected zone on the larger diameter side of the pipe reducer to steam generator nozzle weld.
The licensee has dispatched consultants to the site to perform confirmatory verification and to provide additional information concerning detailed data on the linear indication. The feedwater nozzles on the remaining two steam generators are also being radiographed.
Radiographing of feedwater nozzles was being performed by the licensee at the request of the NRC.
Media interest is not anticipated at this time.
The licensee is planning a news release if an actual crack in the feedwater nozzle is confirmed.
A news release by the NRC is not planned at this time.
The State of South Carolina has been informed.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 8:50 a.m. on June 14.
