PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION June 12, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-150 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Facility:

Commonwealth Edison Company, Zion Unit 1 (DN 50-295) Zion, Illinois

Subject:

PLANT SHUTDOWN EXTENDED BECAUSE OF RADIOGRAPHIC INDICATIONS IN FEEDWATER SYSTEM PIPING WELDS Following the unit trip on June 8, 1979, (reference PNO 79-146), the licensee decided to take the unit to cold shutdown in order to perform radiographic examinations of all steam generator (S/G) feedwater nozzle to feedwater pipe welds.

Preliminary results of these examinations revealed radiographic indica-tions in all four of these welds; the largest indication was approximately 10 inches long.

Further evaluation of these preliminary results and evaluation of new radiographs using different film speeds and UT examinations of these welds were made. These results were compared to construction radiographs of these welds by the licensee's NDE inspection personnel and the RIII Piping Specialist Inspector.

The evaluation concludes that these welds are acceptable and in accordance with applicable code (USAS B 31.1) requirements.

The radio-graphic indications initially reported, and which are present in the original construction radiographs, are attributed to the internal geometry of the fitting.

The licensee plans to return the unit to service on or about June 14, 1979, pending satisfactory results with the comparison on the Zion radiographs with those of D.C. Cook.

A press release was made by Region III.

The State of Illinois has been notified.
