b PPILIMINARY NOTIFICATION June 11, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNU.2UAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-146 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice o event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

PLANT SIRQWN EXTENDED BECAUSE OF PIPE CRACKS FOUND IN FEEDWATER SYSTEM Following the unit trip on June 8, 1079, reference PNO-79-142, the licensee decided to take the unit to cold shutdown in order to perform radiographic examinations of all steam generator (S/G) feedwater nozzle to feedwater pipe welds. Preliminary results of these examinations rev al radiographic indica-tions in all four of these welds; the largest indication is approximately 10 inches long and is located in the root area of the weld associated with the "C" S/G feedwater nozzle.
The licensee is currently preparing to X-ray the same weld areas using the same film speed that was used during construction to further evaluate the radiographic indications.

The licensee estimates that a three week outage will be required, if weld repair is required.
The Resident Inspector is onsite follcwing this matter, and a RIII Piping Specialist Inspector has been dispatched to the site to review the licensee's actions and repair plans, as necessary.
The licensee has not made a press release, and his plans to do so are unknown.
Region III is planning to issue a press release.
The State of Illinois has been notified.
The Region III Resident Inspector received notification of the occurrence from the licensee at 8:45 a.m.
