Subject:
FEEDWATER PIPE CRACKS Radiography of the four Steam Generator (S/G) feedwater nozzle-to-feedwater pipe welds has revealed circumferential crack indications in the heat affected zone on the feedwater pipe side of S/G Nos. 11, 13, and 14.
The largest crack indication found by radiography is an intermittent one on S/G #14 approximately 16 inches long. The crack on S/C #13 has been confirmed by ultrasonic test (U/T) and is 5 to 6 inches long.
Due to system configuration no depth information could be obtained.
U/T has confirmed that no cracks exist in S/G #12. U/T is continuing on S/G Nos. 11 and 14.
Additional detailed information is not available at this time.
Media interest is expected because of continued local interest in the facility.
The State of New Jersey and Delaware have been informed. A press release is not planned at this time. The licensee and the,NRC are responding to news media inquiries.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resident Inspector at 12:00 noon, June 19, 1979.
