June 19, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-170A k
This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
Facility:
Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit 1 DN 50-334, Shippingport, Pennsylvania
Subject:
RADIOGRAPHIC INDICATIONS IN STEAM GENERATOR N0ZZLE TO FEEDWATER LINE WELDS Completion of radiography on all three steam generator (SG) feedwater nozzle to pipe welds has confirmed the presence of circumferential cracks in all of the joints.
These cracks appear to propagate from the shoulder of a piping weld preparation counter bore at a uniform distance from the root weld.
The joints do not contain backing rings as previously rept ued (PNO-79-17" The "A" SG nozzle weld has three separate cracks indications totaling approximately 10 inches in length; the "B" SG has three separate crack indications totaling approximately 19 inches in length; and, the "C"
SG has two separate crack indications totaling approximately 16 inches in length.
The piping has a outer circumference of approximately 51 inches.
Crack depth detenninations have not yet been made.
All affected areas were subjected to an external magnetic partic?^ examination which indicated no evidence of cracks at the surface of the piping.
The licensee is currently planning additional nondestructive and destructive examination of the affected welds and is coordinating this effort and the repair planning with their NSSS vendor.
Media interest is expected because of continued local interest in site activities.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is being kept informed.
A press release'is planned by the licensee.
Region I is responding to inquiries from the news media.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received initial notification of this accurrence by telephone from the plant superintendent, at 2:35 p.m., on June 18, 1979.
Updated information was provided by the licensee on June 19, 1979.
