PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-170

[V i

This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Facility:

Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit 1 DN 50-334, Shippingport, Pennsylvania

Subject:

RADIOGRAPHIC INDICATIONS IN STEAM GENERATOR N0ZZLE TO FEED-WATER LINE WELDS Preliminary review of radiographic examinations of the steam generator (SG) nozzle to feedwater pipe welds revealed radiographic indications of cracking in both the A and C SG.

These crack indications are circumferential and are located at the 6 and 12 o' clock positions.

The length of the indications is approximately 10 inches about the 12 o' clock position and 4-5 inches about the 6 o' clock position.

The circumferential cracks appear to propogate from an angular groove machined into the piping to accept the weld joint's backing ring.

Detailed information regarding these indications is not yet available.

The B SG was also radiographed but film results do not permit clear interpretation.

Additional radiography of the B SG is planned for June 18-19, 1979.

The plant is presently in cold shutdown due to the NRC's Order regarding the design of seismic piping.

Media interest is expected because of continued local interest in site activi-ties. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed. A press release has not been made by the licensee. Region I is considering a press release.

NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by tclephone from the Plant Superintendent at 2:35 PM on June 18, 1979.
