PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-168 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

FACILITY:

Florida Power and Light Company Turkey Point, Unit Nos. 3 and 4 Docket No. 50-250 and 50-251 Homestead, Florida

SUBJECT:

UNIT OUTAGE DUE TO EXCESSIVE REACTOR COOLANT PUMP SEAL LEAKAGE Excessive leakage from a reactor coolant pump seal caused Unit No. 3 to be shut down on June 17.

The unit is expected to be down 10 to 12 days.

During this outage, the licensee plans to radiograph the feedwater line welds to all three steam generators, in addition to repairing the failed seal on the reactor coolant pump.

Unit No. 4 is expected to achieve criticality on June 18, to commence low power phycies testing following a refueling outage that commenced on April 4.

Media interest is not anticipated.

A news release is not planned by the licensee nor the NRC.

The State of Florida has been informed.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 8:30 on June 18.
