PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION June 25, 1979 bi PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PNO--79-189 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date FACILITY: Virginia Electric and Power Company Surry Power Station, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-280 Surry, Virginia
SUBJECT:
INDICATION OF CRACKS IN FEEDWATER N0ZZLES Radiographs on two of the three feedwater nozzle welds indicate inside surface cracks on 45 degrees and 326 degrees of the pipe circumference.
The cracks are located in the heat affected zone on the reducer side of the reducer-to-steam generator nozzle weld.
The feedwater nozzle on the remaining steam generator is being radiographed.
Radiographing of feedwater nozzles was performed by the licensee at the request of the NRC.
Media interest is not anticipated at this time. Neither the licensee nor the NRC plan a news release.
The Commonwealth of Virginia has been informed.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone con-versation from the Surry resident inspector at 10:30 p.m. on June 22.
