safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Facility: Wisconsin Public Service, Kewaunee

~~

(DN 50-305) Kewaunee, Wisconsin SUbjeg:

RADIOGRAPHIC INDICATION IN STEAM GENERATOR-TO-FEEDWATER LINE WELD The licensee had previously identified radiographic indications in the steam generator (SG) nozzle-to-feedwater pipe welds on both SG's (Ref. PN-79-166 and PN-79-166A). The licensee has cutout the feedwater line-to-nozzle transition piece on both steam generators.

Examination of the removed pieces showed a 360 degree crack, approximately.020" deep in the heat affected zone of "B" SG transition piece.

Minor linear indications about 1/2-inch long were also noted on the interior of both SG nozzles. They appear to be shallow.

The licensee is making preparations to replace the transition pieces and grind out the nozzle cracks.

A Region III inspector has been at the site last week observing work in progress and will be at the site to inspect the nozzles and to observe replacement of the transition pieces this week.

Westinghouse is doing a metallurgical examination of removed transition areas.

Plans have not been formulated on the press release. Either the licensee or RIII will make a press release.

The State of Wisconsin is being notified.

Region III was informed of the cracks on June 24, 1979, st 12:00 p.m.

This information is current at of 9:00 a.m., June 25, 1979.
