PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION June 27, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PNO-79-195 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
FACILITY: Virginia Electric and Power Company Surry Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50281 Surry, Virginia
SUBJECT:
INJURY TO THREE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS Three Daniels Construction workers were injured on June 27 while attempting to open a metal crew box equipment container, with a cutting torch.
An unknown substance within the box exploded, blowing the lid open and injuring the three workers.
T' e individuals were taken to Riverside Hospital in Newport News, a
Virginia, for evaluation and treatment of contusions. One worker has a poss-ible broken arm.
The box is located in the Condensate Polishing Building, a nonradiological area.
Media interest is expected due to close public attention given this facility.
Neither the licensee nor NRC plans a news release. The Commonwealth of Virginia and OSHA have been informed.
This Preliminary Notification is issued for information only.
No further action by IE is anticipated; however, the resolution of this matter will be reviewed by IE.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone conversation from the licencee at 8:45 a.m. on June 27.
