PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION June 28,'1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-198 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information prescuted is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Facility: Jersey Central Power and Light Company Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station Forked River, New Jersey (DN 50-219)

Subject:

POTENTIAL DR0WNING IN DISCHARGE CANAL An RI inspector onsite, advised that an elderly man fell in the discharge canal while fishing / crabbing around 9:00 A.M., June 28, 1979.

He is not a licensee employee and was spot.ted by a security guard. The site of the incident was in the canal just un stream of the U. S. Route 9 bridge.

Search and recovery operations are in progress.

Media interest is expected because of high public and media interest at Oyster Creek. The State of New Jersey has been informed. A press release is not planned by the licensee nor NRC at this time.

NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurence by telephone call from an inspector on site at 11:23 on June 28, 1979.
