PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION l
June 28, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-199 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
Facility: Public Service Electric and Gas Company Salem County, New Jersey Salem Nuclear Generating Station - Unit 1 (DN 50-272)
Subj ect:
TEMPORARY EVACUATION OF AUXILIARY BUILDING While making a valve lineup to pump water from the Refueling Water Storage Tank (RWST) to the Spent Fuel Pool at approximately 2130 on June 27, 1979, r adiation alarms on the charging pump area monitor acd liquid waste release line were received.
In accordance with procedure, the licensee evacuated the Auxiliary Building until the cause of the alarms could be determined.
Subsequent investigation indicated that the RWST suction line, which enters the Auxiliary Building at elevation 84', had radiation levels of up to 30R/hr on contact.
Only a short cection of the 20-inch diameter pipe shows the high radiation levels.
The origin of the radiation appears to be a small or point source of unknown composition.
Radiation levels within a few feet from the source are within normal background levels. The source and nature of the material is still under investigation.
The radiation alarms were actuated due to their proximity to the section of pipe.
No release of activity or significant exposure to personnel occurred. No notification outside the station was made.
Media interest is expected because of the likelihood that this event will be cade known to media representatives.
The States of New Jersey and Delaware have been informed. A press release is not planned by the NRC or the licensee.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by facsimile from the Resident Inspector at 0830 on June 28, 1979.
