PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION June 28, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-201 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
RADIOGRAPHIC INDICATION IN FEEDWATER LINE ELBOW WELD The licensee has previously identified cracks in the steam generator nozzle to feedwater line transition pipe.
(Ref. PNO-79-166, 166A, and 166B) The licensee has started to examine other welds in the feedwater line.
Crack indications have been found in the first weld of the first elbow upstream from "B" steam generator feedwater nozzle.
The pipe downstream of the elbow contains the auxiliary feedwater nozzle.
The indications are located in the lower half of the pipe to elbow weld.
The crack indication was found by single wall radiographs and confirmed by Dye Penetrant testing.
Plans have not been formulated on a press release.
The State of Wisconsin is being notified.
Region III was informed of the crack indications on June 28, 1979 at 4:30 a.m.
