SUBJECT:
POSSIBLE DESIGN DEFICIENCY IN THE SEISMIC SUPPORTS ON THE MAIN STEAM LINES WITHIN THE REACTOR BUILDING AP&L has been informed by Bechtel that eight (8) snubbers and two (2) hangers on the main steam line between the steam generators and the reactor building wall of Unit One may have a design deficiency.
The transient /dynatic loads from closure of the main steam stop valve were not considered in the design of these supports.
During closure of the main steam stop valves the applied load may exceed the design load.
AP&L expects to receive a design change for these pipe supports from Bechtel July 16 or 17.
The unit is currently in cold shutdown for an inspection of a low pressure turbine and will remain in this mode pending co=pletion of any required modifications to the seismic supports.
A press release is not planned.
Region IV was initially notified of this event at 12:15 p.c.
on July 14, 1979 by the IE Resident Inspector.
