SUBJECT:
PIJECTABLE WELDS IN FEEDWATER SYSTEM The feedwater piping welds inside Unit No. I containment are being radiographed as required by IE Bulletin 79-13 in accordance with Section III of the ASME Code.
Cracks in the steam generator nozzle area have been previously reported in PEO-79-189 and PNO-79-218.
Unit No. I radiography is 75 percent complete and seven feedwater pipe welds have rejectable indications.
Three welds have small areas of porosity; three have small areas of ince=plete fusion, and one has indications of root concavity and undercutting.
These welds were originally fabricated and exacined in accordance with USAS B31.1,1967 edition. Radiography was not required; however, by company policy feedwater line welds were radiographe d.
Cocparison of current radiographs to the original radiographs has not been ompleted at is time.
The licensee plans to repair these welds prior to startup.
Unit No. 1 is presently shut down for seismic reanalysis of safety-related piping with startup planned for August 1979. Unit No. 2 feedwater lines will be radiographed during the steam generator replacement outage which is currently in progress with startup scheduled for November 1979.
Media interest is not anticipated.
A news release is not planned by the licensee or the NRC.
The Co=monwealth of Virginia has been informed.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence from the licensee at 3:32 p.m. on July 16.
