The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

FACILITY:

Carolina Power and Light Company Brunswick Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-325 Southpo rt, North Carolina

SUBJECT:

EEACTOR TRIP The reactor tripped from 60 percent power while attempting to place recircu-lation pump 1B in se.vice.

The recirculation pump had been stopped a't 11:30 p.n. on July It due to a failure of the motor generator set lubricating oil system. Following the resolution of the oil system problem, the recircula-tion pur.) was restarted.

While opening the pump discharge valve, the average power range monitor spiked and a reacter trip occurred.

An investigation by the licensee and the IE Resident Inspector is being conducted of procedural adequacy /

adherence, operator training and the recirculation flow comparators.

The unit is erpected to be returned to service on July 20.

Media interest is not expected.

Neither the licensee or the NRC plans to issue a news release.

The State of North Carolina has been informed.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone froc the IE Resident Inspector at 10:30 a.m.

on July 19.
