July 19, 1979 PP7TTMTNARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-268 This prelizninarv notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBEE safety or oublic interest significance. The infornation presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

FACILITY:

Carolina Power and Light Company Brunswick, Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50-324 Southport, North Carolina

SUBJECT:

FLANNED SHUTDOWN On July 17, a Target Rock relief valve opened for five minutes with the unit operating at 90 percent r ower.

No cause could be deter =ined for the valve opening. At 10:00 a.m. e a July 19 the valve opened again.

Power was reduced fro: 94 percent to 50 percent and the valve reseated.

The licensee is removing

the unit from service to replace the valve.

'Jbe shutdown should last two days.

The IE Resident Inspector is reviewing the circumstances concerning this failure.

Media interest is not expected.

Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to issue a news release.

The State of North Carolina has been informed.

Eegion II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the IE Resident Inspector at 10:30 a.m.

on July 19.
