Duke Power Company McGuire Units 1 and 2 and Catawba Units I and 2 Docket Nos. 50-369, 50-370, 50-413, 50-414 Cornelius, North Carolina and Clover, South Carolina

SUBJECT:

DELAY IN CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE AT TWO NUCLEAR SITES Duke Power Company announced a delay in completion of four reactors at two sites from one half year to two years.

The company attributed the unavoidable delays to the rapidly increasing regulation of nuclear generating plants and cited unprecedented engineering requirements for piping supports and expanded pre-operational testing as two primary causes of the delays.

Plants included and the stated delays are as follows:

McGuire Unit 1 - Delayed from early 1980 to August 1980 McGuire Unit 2 - Delayed from 1981 to 1982 C itawba Unit 1 - Pelayed from 1981 to 1983 Catawba Unit 2 - Delayed from 1983 to 1985 National media interest has been shown.

The licensee issued a news release on July 18.

h4C does not plan to issue a news release.

The State of North Carclina and the State of South Carolina have been informed.

This Preliminary Notification is issued for information only.

No further action by IE is anticipated.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from Duke Power Company at 3:00 p.m. on July 18.
