PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-271 This orelicinary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIELE saf ety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

CONTAMINATION OF WORKERS On July 20, Region I was informed by the licensee that 6 mechanics had become externally contacinsted on July 19, 1979 while working on the internals lif ting rig.

Tne cen exhibited various levels of contamination of the knee, face, hands, and nasal passages area up to a maximum of 200,000 dpm (one worker's knee) when exiting the controlled area.

The men were decontaminated and whole body counted (wituout showering); results indicated a maximum of 2*; of maximum pertissible body burden.

The men are schedulec f ar additional whole body ccunting today (a f ter showering).

This catter will be reviewed during an inspection currently scheduled for this month.

NEC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence at 10:30 a.m., July 20, 1979 from the Resident Reactor Inspector.
