LOST SHIPMENT OF LICENSED BYPRODUCT MATERIAL The licensee reported that a radioactive shipment, one of four boxes, did not reach its destination.
The box which is lost contains 63 millicuries of iodine 131, 100 millicuries of molybdenum 99, and less than 2 millicuries of iodine 125 in a total of 13 sources.
The shipment was loaded onto an Eastern Airlines flight on July 9, 1979, for Charlotte, North Carolina.
The licensee has put a tracer on the package through the carriers of the ship =ent.
An NRC, Region III (Chicago) inspector, who is on site for a routine inspection, is following the results of the effort.
NEC, Region II, Atlanta, was notified of the loss by Region III on July 23, 1979, and they will notify the State of North Carolina.
Other states will be notified as appropriate after the other intermediate aircraft stops are identified.
There has been no media interest to date on this incident.
Region III is considering issuing a press release.
Region III received notification of this incident by telephone on July 23, 1979, at 11:00 a.m.
