SUBJECT:

FAILURE OF EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR UURING SURVEILLANCE TESTING On July 24,1979, during required surveillance testing of both emergency diesei generators, a fire occurred.in the exhaust manifold of one diesel generator.

Ti'e fire was self extinguished when the diesel generator automatically shut down on high exhaust temperature.

Damage was limited to the insulation of electrical wiring associated with the diesel that was overheated due to proximity to the exhaust manifold.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a buildup of carbon and fuel in the exhaust manifold.

A diesel manufacturer representative is due onsite today.

The licensee estimates that reactor startup following the current refueling outage may be delayed 2 to 4 days.

Local media interest is anticipated.

Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to issue a news release.

The State of Florida has been informed.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this. occurrence by telephone from the onsite inspector at 9:00 a.m. on July 25, 1979.
