Subject:
PLANT TRIP DUE TO LIGHTNING STRIKE A turbine load rejection an~d subsequent reactor scram occurred at 1:01 a.m.
July 27, 1979, as a result of a lightning strike in the switchyard which resulted in a ioss of off site power.
During the subsequent transient spurious operation (cpen/close) of the safety relief valve occurred at 600 psig.
The licensee is going to cold shutdown to repair the safety relief valve and one other safety relief valve which exhibited high tail pipe ~ temperature (failure to fully reseat)
'olic+ ting actuation during the event.
Restart is scheduled for July 28, 1979.
Pedia interest is expected because of the plant trip and general public interest in events at nuclear power plants.
The Commonwealth of Massachussets nac Deen informed.
A press release is planned by the licensee.
