PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION August 10, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-328

The information oresented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staf f on this date.

Consumers Power Company (Palisades)
Jackson, Michigan Region III (Chicago) issued an Immediate Action Letter (IAL) to Consumers Power Company on August 10, 1979.
The IAL was issued following discovery of water in a shipment of radioactive waste to a burial facility in Barnwell, South Carolina (See PNO-79-320) and leaking containers in a shipment to a burial firm in Beatty, Nevada on July 2,1979.
The IAL confirms a Palisades management commitment to: a) examine procedures and controls on the processing, transfer and shipment of waste for conformance with DOT, NRC and recipient licensee requirements, b) to discontinue all shipments until actions are taken to verify compliance with the above requirements, and c) to notify the Region III Office when the actions in (a) are completed.
DOT and State officials have been notified.
No press release is planned.
