SUBJECT:
FIFTEEN MEN BECAME ILL WHILE WORKING IN THE TURBINE CONDENSER Fifteen men became ill while removing tubing from the turbine condenser and were taken to Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Virginia, on February 11. The illness was diagnosed as " metal fever".
Thirteen of the individuals were hospitalized overnight for observation.
Flame cutting of tubes has been discontinued pending an investigation of the cause of the illnesses and checking the adequacy of the ventilation.
The men had not been working in contaminated or radiation material areas. The reactor had previously been shutdown to replace the steam generators.
Media interest occurred on a local television station February 11.
The licensee plans to issue a news release; the NRC does not plan to issue a news release.
The Commonwealth of Virginia has been notified.
Region II ( Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resident Inspector at 7 p.m. on February 11.
