PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION April ll, 19/9 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-80 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
ABNORMAL FUEL CLADDING DEGRADATION This supplements PN0-79-75 dated April 6, 1979 The licensee reported the p.reliminary results of thei. examination and sipping of the fuel.
A 4-inch section of fuel pin fell out of assembly Number 2-13 from position A-5 during the removal of this assembly.
Tiie section of fuel pin was recoverrd. The licensee also recovered the 6-inch section of fuel pin that fell out of assembly No. 2-33 which was reported in PN0-79-75.
Six other assemblies had visual indications of cracking and three had possible cracking indications.
All the fuel with defects had been scheduled for removal this refueling cycle.
Only two assemblies scheduled to go back for the next cycle had indications of leaking, one visually, the other by sipping.
These assemblies will not be reinstalled.
The license has notified the NRR Project Manager and plans to meet with NRR next week to discuss this subject.
NRC inspectors have been following the refueling.
No press release is oeing planned at this time by RIII or the licensee.
The State of Wisconsin has been notified.
