The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that i:: known by IE staff on this date. Facility: Dairyland Power Cooperative La Crosse Boiling Water Reactor (DN-50-409) Genoa, Wisconsin

ABNORMAL FUEL CLADDING DEGRADATION At 3:05 p.m. today, the licensee reported that, while removing the first fuel assembly (2-33) from the reactor (cycle 6 refueling outage), a 6-inch section of fuel pin fell out of the assembly between the lower two assembly bands. No other evidence of damage has been observed on the remaining pins in that assembly. The assembly had 14,500 MWD /T exposure. The six inch fuel pin section is now lodged upon the fuel assembly in core position G-2. The licensee feels it can be easily retrieved. NRC inspectors will be at the site April 8,1979 to follow refueling activities. The State of Wisconsin is being notified. No press release is being planned at this time by RIII or the licensee.
