g PRELIMINARY NOTTFirATION February 26, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-32 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received withnut verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
AIRPLANE ACCIDENT The NRC resident inspector at D. C. Cook reported an airplane accident at the Benton Harbor, Michigan airport at 6:50 a.m. on February 26.
A Iight airplane carrying a shipment of sodium-24 in carbonate f: rm, 0.63 curies, (Consigned to D. C. Cook from the University of Missouri) ran off the runway due to a landing gear problem.
There was no injury to the pilot nor damage to the sh'pment.
The resident inspector and a survey team from the plant report (d to the airport and determined that there was no release of material as evidenced by visual and smear surveys.
The licensee has taken the shipment to the plant site.
The State of Michigan has been notified of the incident by RIII on February 26, 1979.
There has been media interest, press and radio, however, RIII does not plan a press release.
RIII will respond to any inquiries by the media, press or radio.
NRC, RIII, Chicago, received notification of this incident on February 26, 1979 at 7:30 a.m. CST.
