March 23, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PN0-79-59 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that-is known by IE staff as of this date.

SUBJECT:
CRACKED FLOW SPLITTER Cracks were found in each end of the flow splitter for one of three
~
reactor main coolant pumps on March 21 while cleaning the primary system.
Cleaning was being performed. following completion of hot functional testing.
The flow splitter is a seven-foot by 11/16-inch steel plate which is welded into the 31-inch suction line of each main coolant pump.
The largest crack is 18-inches long and runs from the weld toward the center of the suction line.
Cracks have not developed in either of the other two flow splitters on Unit 2.
Westinghouse representatives are on site to assist VEPC0 in determining the cause of failure and proposed corrective action.
The IE Resident Inspector is following the licensee's evaluation and corrective action.
Unit 2 is undergoing preoperational testing and is not licensed to operate.
Numerous inquiries have been received regarding this problem and additional local and national media interest is expected.
The licensee issued a news release on March 22; an NRC news release is not planned.
The Commonwealth of Virginia has been informed of this event.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of national media interest about this problem by telephone from the NRC Public Affairs Office at 5:00 p.m. on March 22.
