6<6 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION January 22, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-12 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
Facility:
Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Calvert Cliffs, Unit 2 Lusby, Maryland DN 50-318
Subject:
UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN TO PEPAIR DAMAGED SEALS ON REACTOR COOLANT PUMP AND DEGRADED REACTOR C0OLANT SYSTEM PRESSURE BOUNDARY On January 20, 1979, the Unit 2 reactor was manually tripped due to excessively high seal temperatures on the 22A reactor coolant pump.
The cause of the high temperature e s attributed to a small leak (approximately 2.5 gallons per minute) from a cracked weld on the lower pressure sensing line from the pump seals.
The cracked weld constitutes a degradation of the reactor coolant system pressure boundary.
Subsequent inspection of the pump revealed apparent damage to the pump seals.
Repairs to the pump and weld joint will result in an estimated shutdown of one week.
The leak did not result in any radioactivity release to the environment.
Media interest is not expected because of the minor nature of the event.
The State of Maryland has been informed.
A press release is not planned by the licensee or NRC.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Performance Engineer - Operations at 11:00 a.m.,
on January 22, 1979.
