January 2,1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-01 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of-POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented 1s as initially received without ve_rification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Facility: Arkansas Power and Light Company Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1 Russellville, Arkansas Docket No. 50-313 Jbject: TURBINE TRIP DUE TO HIGH BEARING VIBRATION On December 30, 1978, Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit One operations personnel tripped the turbine after receiving excessive vibration alarms on the low pressure turbine bearings.

Subsequent investigation by the licensee 4

after plant shutdown, revealed chunks of cast metal that may be pieces of rotating and stationary blading in the turbine condenser.

The unit will be down for an unknown period of time pending the results of an inspection of the Low Pressure turbine.

A press release will be made by the licensee.

Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the ANO Operations Supervisor on January 2,1979.
