August 31, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-79-167 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest sianificance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date
SUBJECT:
HURRICANE DAVID Region II at 11:00 a.m., August 31, 1979, initiated 4 hurricane watch for Hurricane David.
David is currently a severe hurricane, classified by the National Hurricane Center as a Stafford/Simpson scale Category 4 (maximum 5, minimum 1).
Region II has established communications with the Deputy Director, National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida and Meteorologists at the area Regional office in Atlanta, Georgia to plot the course of the storm and to

receive weather advisories.
Region II has contacted the Florida Power and Light, Turkey Point and St. Lucie facilities, Florida Power Corporation's Crystal River facility, and Alabama Power Company's Farley facility.
Region II is monitoring these licensee's operational status, backup emergency power' status, and hurricane alert proce-dures.
All licensees reported that their emergency power supplies are operable.
The facilities in G rida initiated the preparatory aspects of their severe weather emergency procedures.
Region II has verified operability of the hotiine system from Region II to these licensees and has made arrangements for alternate telephone / microwave communications to these sites.
