The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all tnar is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:

TRANSPORTATION AND STUDIES ON RADI0 ACTIVE STEAM GENERATOR A contract has been awarded'-to Battelle-Northwest Laboratories in Richland, Wasnington to conduct exami. nations and studies of the Surry-2 failed steam ge ne ra tor.

This reactor has been <>perating since 1973 so significant radio-activity is present inside the steam generator.

The radioactivity is Type A cuantities, and the packaging i's under the jurisdiction of the Depcrtment of T a sportation (DOT).

DDT has reviewed and approved the packaging and trans-Oc tation plans.

The scaled body of the steam generator, with some lccalizec shielding, will ccnstitute the " package."

It will be placed on a barge and towed cown the James U <er, south to the Panama Canal, through the Canal, north to the Columbia River, a.d up the river to Richland, Washington.

The ship.ent will be acco.panied oy Battelle-Northwest represeritatives.

The shipment is plannec for tne middle of Nc cember 1979, with arrival in Richland, Washington sometime in December.

~..e NRC will have regulatory jurisdiction during rereval and loading at the Sur y site.

The actual examinations and studies will be concucted by Battelle-Ncr:nwest as a DOE prime contractor and will be exempt from NhC jurisdiction.
