(j)W PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-371 This oreliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest sionificance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is Dasically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:

DELAYED PLANT STARiUP DUE TO PUMP MOTOR FAILURE During preparation work for the startup of the Indian Point Unit 2 reactor following a refueling outage, a reactor coolant pump motor breaker tripped.

Investigation determined that the motor windings were possibly defective.

The licensee plans to replace the motor with an onsite spare.

This replacement will delay plant startup approximately three days.

This PN is issued for information only.

The site Resident Reactor Inspector will followup on the licensee's repairs during the course of routine inspections.

Media interest is possible due to the public's sensitivity to nuclear power plant problems.

The State of New York has been info-rec.

A press release is not planned by the licensee or NRC at this time.

NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of tnis cccurrence by telephone from the Resident Inspector at 11:00 a.m., on August 27, 1979.
