PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-419 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without veiification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
FACILITY:
Carol'na Power and Light Company Brunswick, Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50-324 Southport, North Carolina
SUBJECT:
SHUTDOWN CAUSED BY NUCLEAR SERVICE WATER LEAK l
The unit is being shut down to repair a leak in the nuclear portion of the Service Water System; a salt water system.
The leak is on the inside radius of a concrete lined carbon steel 30 to 20-inch reducing elbow.
The leaking elbow is located in the Reactor Building.
The leak was isolated and the conventional portion of the Service Water System has been cross connected to the nuclear portion of the Service Water System to provide component cooling.
The duration of the outage is not known at this time.
Media interest is not expectedc Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to issue a news release.
The State of North Carolina has been informed.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the IE Resident Inspector at 1:30 p.m. on September 12, 1979.
