PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION August 29, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-377 This oreliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staf f on this date.

Facility:

Wisconsin Electric Power Company, Point Beach 1 (DN 50-266), Two Creeks, WI

Subject:

SIEAM GENERATOR TUBE LEAK Unit 1 is being shut down this morning because of increasing primary to secondary steam generator leakage.

The current leak rate is 324 gpd and has been increas-ing at the rate of 40 gpd. -(The TS limit is 500 gpd).

The leak has existed since the startup on August 19, 1979 following the outage to correct steam generator tank leaks.

The licensee suspects a bad plug in a previously plugged tube.

The licensee hopes to identify and correct the leak and th2n return to power operation until September 29, 1979, when Unit 1 is scheduled down for refueling.

The licensee intends t'o inform the news media of the shutdown.

The State of Wisconsin is being notified.

The Region does not intend to make a press release.

The NRC received notification of this shutdown at 8:30 a.m., August 29, 1979.

The licensee informed the RIII inspector who is onsite.
