September 18, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-427 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Consumers Power Company, Palisades (DN 50-255) Covert, Michigan
Subject:
PRELIMINARY INDICATION OF A CRACK IN THE FEEDWATER TO STEAM GENERATOR N0ZZLE Ultrasonic testing of the feedwater pipe to nozzle transition piece per IE Bulletin 79-13 on the "A" steam generator resulted in an undefinable indication.
Preliminary review of the radiographs of this nozzle by a level II radiographer indicates that crack indications are present; however, the final interpretation is pending further licensee ' evaluation by a level III radiographer.
A Region III construction inspector, qualified in nondestructive examination, is presently onsite and is following the licensee's evaluation.
The plant is currently shutdown for refueling.
The State of Michigan has been notified.
Neither the licensee nor NRC plan to issue a news release at this time.
Region III was notified of this condition on September 17, 1979 by the site resident inspector.
