_POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

FACILITY:

Florida Power Corporation Crystal River, Unit 3 Docket Number 50-302 Crystal River, Florida

SUBJECT:

INDUSTRIAL DEATH IN SPENT FUEL P0OL At about 7:00 a.m. on April 25, a contractor employee fell into tae spent fuel poal and was killed.

The man fell about forty feet to the bottom of the pool which was drained for maintenance on the fuel transfer mechanisms.

It is believed that the man was walking along the edge of the pool between the protective rope barricade and the edge of the pool and apparently tripped, falling over the edge.

The body is slightly contaminated from surface contamination on the floor of the pool.

The licensee is making arrangements to take the body to the Seven Rivers Hospitai in Crystal River, Florida.

Crystal River 3 was shut down for a routine refueling on April 23, 1979.

Local media interest is expected.

A news release is planned by the licensee.

The State of F.lorida and OSHA have been informed.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the on-site inspector at 8:00 a.m. on April 25.
