1 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-103 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information gresented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
REACTOR VESSEL N0ZZLE SURFACE CRACK INDICATIONS The RIII Resident Inspector notified the region at 10:00 a.m. today, that the licensee has identified indications in the number 2, reactor vessel hot leg nozzle. The indications were identified (through dye penetrant testing) in the Inconel 600 overlay where the safe end joins the nozzle.
There are 5 to 10 indications, 1/8" to 3/16" in length, 180 around the nozzle (from 3 o' clock to 9 o' clock). The indications are located in areas which had been ground during a previous outage.
Unit 1 is presently in a refueling outage. RIII will closely follow this matter to resolution.
Neither the licensee nor RIII intends to issue a press release.
The State of Michigan has been notified.
