PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION April 20, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFTCATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-87 This oreliminary notification constitutes EA.RLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verifica' ion or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

FACILITY:

Virginia Electric and Power C6mpany Surry Unit 2 Docket No. 50-281 Surry County, Virginia

SUBJECT:

THREE MEN BECOME ILL WHILE WORKING IN CONTAINMENT Three Caniels Construction Company personnel were taken to the hospital when they became ill while working in the Unit 2 Containment Building.

The men ware cutting up a portion of the "B" steam generator.

The men were working in a tent and were wearing fresh air hoods.

The air in the tent and the fresh air supply were sampled and found satisfactory.

All three men were conscious and were taken to the hospital fw tests and observation.

Initial diagnosis indicated that illness was due to heat exhaustion and men have been released from the hospital.

Local media interest is expected due to close public attention given to activities at this site.

A news release is not planned by the licensee nor the NRC.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has been informed.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resid?nt Inspector at 11:00 a.m. on April 19, 1979.
