N PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION May 1, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-95 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
UNPLANNED AIRBORNE RELEASE FROM REACTOR COOLANT SPILL A drain line flow sight glass broke on a reactor coolant pump seal injection filter, releasing approximately 700 gallons of water to the seal filter room floor in the auxiliary building.
The discharge seal injection filter train was being purged prior to being returned to service when the incident occurred at 3:10 p.m. on April 30, 1979. One licensee employee received minor personal contamination as a result of the incident.
This employee and several addi-tional employees involved in the cleanup effort were whole body counted.
No significant internal uptake was detected.
There was no liquid released offsite.
An onsite alert was initiated at 3:10 p.m.; the alert was terminated at 3:35 p.m.
An estimated 11 curies of gaseous activity and less that I millicurie of iodine activity were released to the atmosphere as a result of the incident.
No technical specification release limits were exceeded.
Region III (Chicago) received notification of this occurrence at 3:40 p.m.
on April 30, 1979. The State of Illinois was notified.
Commonwealth Edison Company does not intend to issue a press release. A press release is planned by Region III.
The Region III Resident Inspector will review this matter today.
