PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION May 25, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-79-128 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presenced is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date FACILITY:

Carolina Power and Light Company Brunswick, Units No. I and 2 License Nos. DPR-71 and DPR-62 Southport, North Carolina

SUBJECT:

PROBLEM IN REANALYSIS OF PIPING STRESSES The licensee verbally reported on May 25 that Brunswick Unit Nos. 1 and 2 were being shutdown due to problems identified with piping supports on safety-related systems. A review by United Engineers and Constructors has revealed six inadequately designed supports on Unit 2 safety systems out of approximately 100 supports reviewed. Unit 1 is at 100% power; Unit 2 is at 75% power.

Both units will be placed in cold shutdown on 5/26.

The questionable supports identified on Unit 2 were on high pressure safety injection and safety relief valve lines.

Unit 1 is the same design and the licensee decided to shutdown both units.

The duration of the outage is not known at this time.

Media interest is expected.

A news release is being issued by the licensee.

No news release is planned by the NRC. The State of North Carolina has been info rmed.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telecon from the licensee at 3:50 p.m. on May 25.
