PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION

May 31, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-130 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1 Public Service Electric and Gas Company (New Jersey)
Subject:
BROKEN R0D CLUSTER CONTROL ASSEMBLY RODLETS When removing the rod cluster control assembly (RCCA) from fuel assembly 33A in order to install thimble plugs prior to reinsertion into the core, operators noted that two of_the 24 rodlets attached to the RCCA spider were broken off just below the spider vane.
The licensee is evaluating the cause and time of the occurrence.
A spare RCCA is being transferred from Unit 2.
The two missing rodlets will probably preclude re-use of the affected fuel assembly in the Cycle 2 core.
It is expected that in-spection of all RCCA's will be conducted.
Media interest is expected because of continued local interest in the facility.
The State of New Jersey has been informed.
A press release has been made by the licensee.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resident Inspector at 9:15 a.m. on May 31, 1979.
