PRELIf11 NARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURREllCE--Pfi0-79-116 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

FACILITY:

Virginia Electric and Power Company Surry, Unit tio. 2 Docket No. 50-281 Surry County, Virginia

SUBJECT:

WORKER INJURY A Daniels Construction worker was injured at 2:00 p.m. on May 17 when he fell into the upper portion of a steam generator.

The upper portion of the steam generator has been detached from the main body of the steam g' enerator and in an inverted position in the containment building.

The injuries were not serious but the individual was sent to the hospital for examination.

This event did not result in contamination or radiation exposure to the individual.

Local media interest is expected due to local intert.st in activities at this site.

A news release is not planned by the licensee or the NRC.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has been informed.

Regional II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resident Inspector at 4:55 p.m. on May 17.
