Dear Sir:

Subject:

Response to I&E Bulletin 79-17 The following information is being submitted in response to USNRC I&E Bulletin 79-17.

The responses are numbered corresponding to the Bulletin paragraph numbers.

2. (a) A visual inspection, based on Article Ik'A-5000 of Section XI of the ASME Code, was conducted of the stagnant borated, oxygenated systems at Maine Yankee.

These systems included High Pressure Safety Injection, Low Pressure Safety Injection, Containment Spray, and Residual Heat Removal systems. All stagnant portions of these systems, including those in-accessible and those accessible during reactor operation were examined. Because one of the containment spraf pumps is out of service, a small portion of the piping associated with it was not inspected at operating pressure.

All other piping was at normal pressure.

No evidence of leakage was found.

' (b) A total of 117 welds were inspected by ultrasonic examination.

Of these, 33 were also examined using liquid penetrant techniques. These welds represent 10% of the total number of welds in the four systems listed in 2.(a) by system by pipe size. No indications were found.
