{{#Wiki_filter:. TEST REPCRT FCR L.S.A. SHIPPING CONTAISH S In accordance with criteria for compliance with CFR 49, paragraph 178.350 and 10 CFR 71, paragraph 71.31, 71.32 ard 71.33 By J.A. Zi'dak, Packaging Engineering General Electric Co. hbclear Energy Division San Jose, California DATE ISSUED: Septem'cer 8, 1979 1229 220 79103003 7 9

Page 1 1.0 CERTIFICATION This is to certify that containers Identified by General Electric drawings 112D1554 and 112D1565 were tested and that they comply with the requirements of CFR 49 paragraph 178.350, Specification 7A; General Packaging type A, and paragraphs 71.31, 71.32 and 71.35 of 10 CFR 71, Packaging of Radioactive Material for transport and transportation of radioactive material under certain conditions. 2.0 TEST SLM ARY A water spray test, a 4 foot drop test and a penetration test was conducted on two (2) containers built to drawings 112D1554 and 112D1565, as specified by Appendix A of 10 CFR 71 and CFR 49, paragraph 173.398. Other tests referenced are not required for the following reasons: o Heat - Temperature of 130 F is within nomal operating range for materials of construction. o Cold - Temperature of 40 F is within normal operating range for materials of construction. o, Reduced Pressure - Packaging will breathe, therefore, they x11 be restricted from air transportation. o Vibration - Containers of this type have withstood years of transport with no occurrences of significant damage due to nomal vibration. o Corner Drop - Not required since package weight exceeds 110

pcunds, o Compression Test - This requirement will be satisfied by engineering analysis.

2.1 Loading Containers 112D1554 was loaded with 2605 lbs. of test weights and No.112D1565 was leaded with 1365 lbs. of test weights. The load was weighed on a scale calibrated by the state of California 1979, see test Photo fl. The weights were then placed in respective containers, see photo's 2, 3 and 4. k 'Y ll}

3. 0 TESTS RESULTS 3.1 Water Gray Test Both containers were deluged with a wnter spray heavy enough to keep the entire exposed surface of the package except the bottom continuscusly wet during a period of 30 minutes.

See test photo 5. There were no visible signs of distortion to the container. 3.2 Penetration Test The corainers were penetration tested by impacting the .hemisphe.ical end of a vertical steel cylinder 1 i/4 inches in diameter and weighing 13 pcunds, dropped from a height of 40 inches onto the exposed top of each container. See test photos 6, 7, and S. There was no puncture or physical damage done by the Penetration test. 3.3 Drop Test The two (2) containers, were loaded to their maxinum weight capacity, 2,500 pounds in 112D1554 and 1,300 pounds in container 112D1565. The load was evenly distributed over the entire bottom surface. They were lifted to a height of 4 feet and dropped onto a flat, essentially unyielding surface, impacting on the bottom of the containers. (See photo 9, 10, 11, 12.) There were no cracks,delaminations or structural damage induced by the test. 3.4 Ccepression The containers must be able to support a weight of 2 pounds per square inch multiplied by the maxim:n hori: ental cross secticn of the container. Material will be loaded in the containers with two inch nominal lumber ces seen the material and the container lid to transmit the load through the material. Minimum spacing of the supports is 13 inches. h ! A'l l23
