Dear Mr. MacDonald:

The General Electric Company, Vallecitos Nuclear Center (VNC), hereby requests certification of a wooden shipping container designed for the transport of Type B quantities of Lcw Specific Activity (LSA) material.

The contents of the container shall be limited to solid LSA materials as defined in 10 CFR 71.4 (g)(4),(5).

The container is constructed of 3/4-inch plywood with 2-inch by 4-inch wooden cleats.

The plywood is fastened to the cleats by nails, glue, and lag bolts.

The top of the container is fastened by 3/8-inch bolts.

Reinforcement is pr.ovided at the corners with 10 gauge sheet metal.

Details of the container are shown'in the attached drawings.

As the container is designed for Type B quantities of LSA materials, it must meet the requirements of 10 CFR 71.31, 71.32, and 71.35.

The container meets the requirements of 10 CFR 71.31 as the nature of the materials precludes any chemical or galvanic reaction between components, a positive closure is pro-vided by the 3/S-inch lid bolts, and there are no lifting or tie-dowr devices.

The load resistance requirements of 10 CFR 71.32(a) are addressed in the attached test report. As there is 'no containment vessel in the package and as the contents are limited to the materials specified in 10 CFR 71.4(g)(4) and (5),

10 CFR 71.32(b) is not applicable.

The normal conditions of transport,10 CFR 71.35, are addressed in the attached test report.
