SERIAL NO: GD-79-2598 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation ATTENTION:
Mr. T. A. Ippolito, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 3 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
20555 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-325 AND 50-324 LICENSE NOS. DPR-71 and DPR-62 FIRE PROTECTION
Dear Mr. Ippolito:
Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) submitted a letter dated September 11, 1979 to hTC which requested concurrence with our proposal to revise the design basis for fire protection of cables in the Diesel Generator Building, El.+2' and the Service Water Building, El.+2'.
This proposal was discussed in an October 4, 1979 telephone conversation between CP&L and an NRC fire protection reviewer. NRC and CP&L agreed that a revision to the Fire Protection SER would not be necessary since this design change does not impact the SER bases. NRC concurred with CP&L's proposal after CP&L confirmed the following:
(1) sprinkler heads will be located to protect the cable from an exposure fire at the floor level, (2) where feasible, the sprinkler heads will be located at the ceiling in accordance with STPA 13, and (3) sprinklers at lower elevations with heat collectors will be used where interferences exist.
Based on NRC's October 4, 1979 verbal authorization, CPEL is proceeding with the re-design of fire protection modifications in the buildings as described above.
As requested by NRC, CP&L will send NRC the revised design drawings after they are completed.
Yours very truly, J/
