  • s September 13, 1979 Docket Nos. 50-282 and 50-306 Mr. L. O. Mayer, Manager Nuclear Support ServMes Northern States Power Company 414 Nicollet Mall - 8th Floor Minneapolis, Minnesota 55401

Dear Mr. Mayer:

As part of our generic review of secondary system flow instabilities at nuclear power plants, we have reviewed your submittals dated September 2, 1975, January 29, 1976, and December 30, 1977, for Prairie Island, Unit Nos. 1 and 2 and plant operating data.

We have concluded that water hamer events due to the rapid condensation of steam in the feedwater systems at Prairie Island, Unit Nos. I and 2 is not likely to occur during normal operation or as a result of transient or accident conditions. Therefore, no modifications are necessary at the present time. However, we will continue to monitor your operating reports for indications of water hammer and will reexamine this matter if such indications appear.

Enclosed is our Safety Evaluation that addresses your facility and other facilities with a similar arrangement of main feedwater piping.

Sincerely,

! ftdft/6%
