ENCLOSURE SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS NOT SEISMICALLY SUPPORTED NCR MEB 79-43 10 CFR 50.55(e)
FINAL REPORT Description of Condition Section E.6 of the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant Fire Protection Program Reevaluation states that fire extinguishers within seismic category I structures shall be seismically supported. However, due to a design oversight, seismically qualified mounting brackets were not provided for fire extinguishers located in category I structures.
Safety Imolications The purpose of seismically supporting fire extinguishers is to prevent a fire extinguisher from falling and damaging safety-related equipment during a seismic event.
Thus, had this condition gone uncorrected, the safety of the plant during a seismic event could have been reduced.
Corrective Action Seismically qualified mounting brackets will be installed to secure all fire extinguishers located in category I structures.
Installation of the qualified mounting brackets will be completed by May 30, 1980, for unit 1 and before fuel loading for unit 2.
This matter was coordinated with V. T. Lueng of NRC-NRR in a telecon with TVA on November 27, 1979.
